snail-paced NEDA officials look for short cuts

January is about to end, but most Ambedkar villages in Uttar Pradesh are still awaiting solar electrification. It is because only 600 solar LED systems, of the promised 10,000, have actually been installed in the selected villages.it sounds as thought Bart is practicing his LED lighting supplier wood carrying duties by lugging around his favorite stick, which is about eighteen inches long and two to four inches in diameter. There are times when no matter where I go on our ten acres, he will often choose to proudly take along his favorite stick as we happily tour our property together.

Originally, the Ambedkar villages were to be electrified with solar LED street lamps by the New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (NEDA) by the end of financial year 2009-10.

With the department having missed the extended deadline once again, officials now run the risk of displeasing chief minister Mayawati when she undertakes an inspection of the villages, tentatively in the first week of February.

According to NEDA officials, the "inordinate delay" has been caused by the companies that won the bids and were expected send the solar LED systems to Ambedkar grams.

Though a memorandum of understanding between MIC Electronics and Power Technology Corporation, New Delhi, was signed in 2010, the systems have still not been installed in the selected areas.
