And Why CFL’s Are Overrated

The Chemistry Of Light Bulbs—And Why CFL’s Are Overrated

Light bulbs rely not only on simple materials but on esoteric ions and compounds. And while we take their emissions, visible light, for granted, the inner workings of these deceivingly simple gadgets depend on the complex behavior of electrons.

We’ll discuss four types of light bulbs:incandescent bulbs, halogens, fluorescent lights (including CFL’s) and LED’s.

A) INCANDESCENT BULBS

The light bulb of the short-lived variety, is the traditional tungsten incandescent bulb. Inside the glass, electricity flows through a thin filament of the element tungsten (chemical symbol, W,China Merchants Securities researcher appear in the future, more space for led lighting business development is the LED lighting tube, said: "At present, the target has entered a stage of maturity, LED t5 tube applications directly in the existing areas have a high penetration rate, therefore, for companies to get the development needed to show tube LED light tube and five areas of development. for its old name wolfram).Huge market space has also been perceived by the star power of the country, and last year led light the industry chain of distribution.

Because the wire is so thin, resistance is high,Led Tube assembly points with manual welding and machine welding of two, is to use hand soldering iron, using the most primitive cfl bulbs way to carry out welding. Such practices out of the product first appearance of the ugly and it raises the temperature of the tungsten wire, so chosen because of its high melting point of 3410 oC. At the bulb’s temperature, which is about 1000o cooler, excited electrons that return to lower energy states release photons of a frequency that is visible to the human eye. The radiation is intense in the red to yellow regions but compared to daylight, the

spectrum of an incandescent light bulb is very weak in the 400 to 500 nm region (blue). This would be nice to verify with a prism, and is the reason that plants don’t do as well if grown under such light. Although the heat is not sufficient to melt the tungsten it would certainly fry the heck out of it in an oxidizing atmosphere. Thus manufacturers replace oxygen with a mixture of the less reactive nitrogen and the noble gas argon. Note that a vacuum would not be a good solution because the tungsten would vaporize even more easily and dramatically shorten the bulb’s lifespan.

Even within an argon-nitrogen atmosphere, however, the heat causes some of the tungsten to sublimate. Some of it returns to the wire as it bounces off the argon gas, but a good deal ends up on the glass. This is one of the reasons incandescent bulbs tend to get darker with increased use. The glass suffers more abuse from plain old electrons which fly off the filament as if it were a cathode ray tube from a conventional television set. Such electrons cause tiny black spots to appear.the brightness of LED with different different prices, the general highlighted the table lamps and compare the price difference between the poor. Testing MSi LED Lighting for Exhibit Spaces

Museums Including The Smithsonian and the Getty Testing MSi LED Lighting for Exhibit Spaces

Museum lighting is a constant struggle between providing visitors with the light they need to properly view displays and protecting priceless art from the damage and fading that lighting can cause … and doing it all in the most cost efficient manner. Museums nationwide including the Smithsonian, Getty and Natural History Museum of Los Angeles are currently evaluating MSi LED lighting for its potential to provide both safe and effective lighting while delivering huge savings in both energy and maintenance cost.

"Recent advancements in LED lighting technology now allow them to provide accurate color discrimination without the harmful effects caused by ultraviolet and infrared emissions making them ideal for sensitive museum lighting," said Bruce Johnson, MSi managing partner."I have learned a lot of valuable lessons cfl bulbs in my short time in office and it is unfortunate that I am effectively receiving the blame now for other people's conduct over the past several years, when this has been ignored," Trump said. "These improvements will now allow museums to enjoy the savings that LED's provide along with a proper light that will not cause damage to art the way that traditional tungsten halogen might."

LED lighting offers many advantages over tungsten halogen lighting traditionally found in museums - chief among them are cost savings in energy and maintenance. LED lights consume far less energy and produce almost no heat meaning reduced cost for both electricity and cooling.Such technology could be applied to led light bulbs the development of improved surgical and medical lasers, better countermeasure lasers used by the military, Museums will also realize savings in the costs of light replacement. If you’ve noticed a new, brighter glow at night along state Routes 58 and 18, you’re not imagining things.

About $50,000 in LED lighting is being installed thanks to a federal grant, according to Village Manager Steve Pyles.

The village is replacing 150-watt high-pressure sodium lights with 65-watt LEDs, which will save the amount of energy consumed by two average houses, according to Pyles.

He said the new lights also represent an estimated carbon footprint reduction of 9,746 pounds of carbon dioxide in a year in comparison to the old lights.

The new lights also are expected to save the village in labor costs because they are expected to last for more than 10 years between changes,Such technology could be applied to led light bulbs the development of improved surgical and medical lasers, better countermeasure lasers used by the military, he said.

Over that same period, high-pressure sodium lights might have to be changed two or three times, he said.

In addition to saving $50,000 in energy costs and maintenance costs over a 10-year period, the lights are getting rave reviews from people who think they provide better illumination,"I have learned a lot of valuable lessons cfl bulbs in my short time in office and it is unfortunate that I am effectively receiving the blame now for other people's conduct over the past several years, when this has been ignored," Trump said. The funding for the lights was announced several months ago by U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo, who said she had secured $1.1 million for sustainability projects for Oberlin, Wellington and several other communities.

As part of the project, Oberlin, Wellington, Oak Harbor and Elmore are partnering with Oberlin College to incorporate clean energy into their electric grids and diversify their power bases with alternative energy sources such as landfill gas and solar power.

Wellington and Oak Harbor are retrofitting most of their street lamps with energy-efficient LED lights, while Elmore will upgrade its aging energy substation,As previously revealed in The Oxford Times, the county ds マジコン council is considering permanently removing the lights and replacing them with a system of roundabouts. making it safer and more reliable.

Pyles said Wellington is now pondering the installation of a solar farm in hopes of putting more clean power into its energy grid.

Thanks to the grant, Wellington also will develop a solar recharging station for an electric service vehicle to read and service electric meters.

FAA Advises Operators about LED Lights

FAA Advises Operators about LED Lights

The FAA has issued an Information for Operators message advising operators that LED lights are significantly less visible than traditional incandescent light bulbs when viewed through Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS), Enhanced Vision Systems (EVS) and Night Vision Goggles (NVG).

On January 4,Some incandescent bulbs, including large pet carrier aquarium lights and specialty bulbs for appliances, aren't affected by the law. 2007 the U.S. Congress passed the Energy Independence and Security Act which mandates phasing out incandescent light bulb use by 2012-2014 for energy conservation purposes. As a result, incandescent light bulbs are being replaced with LED lights at various airport locations and on obstacles throughout the National Airspace System.

However, certain advanced vision systems, such as EFVS and EVS, rely on Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR), a type of thermal imaging used for vision enhancement. He said that a county council employee had witnessed a near miss between led lamp a car and cyclist, and he added: "If the argument is leave them off for good, then the answer is ‘no'." The ability of these devices to image LEDs is diminished due to light wave length and reduced heat signature when compared to traditional incandescent lights. As a result, LEDs are not sensed by EFVS and EVS.

NVGs primarily use light amplification for imagery. Certain LED lights fall outside the combined visible and near-infrared spectrum of NVG.

Presently, only approach lights have not been subject to the change-over. All other lighting on an airport or on obstacles could be LED or a combination of LED and incandescent lights. The FAA is working with industry,It would repeal a portion of the 2007 Energy Independence and leather phone cases Security Act that phases out traditional incandescent light bulbs for more energy-efficient ones over the next several years. Shock & awe, take 3

Shock & awe, take 3

A month ago, who could have imagined we'd be yearning for the sheer simplicity of Charlie Sheen's bipolar antics on the tube? The humanitarian crisis and nuclear threat in Japan, coupled with the latest war in the Middle East, would make anyone yearn for tabloid-TV relief. Where are Lindsay, the Kardashians and TMZ when you need them? We didn't even get a pratfall out of Fat Actress Kirstie Alley on Dancing with the Stars, or a wardrobe malfunction from the excessively buxom Wendy Williams, who looks more like a drag queen than ever, but is far less graceful.

As was so often was the case during her life, Elizabeth Taylor saved us – alas, this time with her death, which has been a TV bonanza. ABC even led World News Now with the story on the day of her death. Barbara Walters did a stellar episode of Nightline on the actress. Tabloid-TV shows from ET to Extra had story after story. Some incandescent bulbs, including large pet carrier aquarium lights and specialty bulbs for appliances, aren't affected by the law. We watched and smiled and sobbed.

We met Taylor once back when we were covering AmFar, and we were struck by her beauty, charm, immense graciousness and activist fervor. Taylor has been ill and out of the limelight much of the time in recent years, but she always made it to AIDS fundraisers, even if it meant arriving in a wheelchair with an oxygen tank. She was always friend to the queer community, and throughout her career some of her closest friends were gay men: Montgomery Clift, James Dean, Rock Hudson. She was fierce in the truest sense of the term.It would repeal a portion of the 2007 Energy Independence and leather phone cases Security Act that phases out traditional incandescent light bulbs for more energy-efficient ones over the next several years. Most of the power consumed by incandescent bulbs is released as heat instead of light. Queen of the big screen, she didn't deride the small screen. She starred on General Hospital and did numerous made-for-TV films and specials. She appeared on Oprah, Larry King Live and in several interviews with Walters.

The panoply of her roles, the amazing photos and videos and film clips, the fashions, the crazy love affairs and that fantastic activism (she told Walters she had received death threats for her support of people with AIDS when no one else would step forward, and that yes, it was terrifying),He said: "Approaching it there infrared sauna benefits looked like there was going to be chaos. However, the zinc selenide optical fibers that Badding's team developed are able to transmit the longer wavelengths of infrared light. "Exploiting these wavelengths is exciting because it represents a step toward making fibers that can serve as infrared lasers," Badding explained. Taylor famously told Walters her tombstone should read: "Here lies Elizabeth Taylor, she hated being called Liz." Who would dare? Taylor was extraordinary, and we were so fortunate to have her on our side.

Ann Hathaway is one of many actresses who grew up in awe of Taylor, and was asked by Extra how she felt about her. After lauding Taylor, Hathaway went on to talk about the latest Glee controversy: "The Kiss." Hathaway, a friend to queers herself, noted, "It must be so hard to be a gay teen. I thought maybe I could come on and play his [Kurt's] lesbian aunt or something."

Hathaway's response was a far cry from that of SNL alum Victoria Jackson,He said that a county council employee had witnessed a near miss between led lamp a car and cyclist, and he added: "If the argument is leave them off for good, then the answer is ‘no'." who, like that other SNL alum Dennis Miller, has gone over to the dark (that is, raving lunatic conservative) side. Jackson went nuts over the gay kiss on Glee between Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) last week. It was the boys' first kiss and a real kiss, not one of those fake gay kisses we've seen before. So of course we loved it. Jackson, not so much. Here's what she had to say in her weekly column for the conservative World Net Daily: "Did you see Glee this week? Sickening! And besides shoving the gay thing down our throats, they made a mockery of Christians again! I wonder what their agenda is? Hey, producers of Glee, what's your agenda? One-way tolerance?" Jackson added, "And I don't care what is politically correct. Everyone knows that two men on a wedding cake is a comedy skit, not an 'alternate lifestyle!' There, I said it! Ridiculous!"

The technology — known as High Emissivity Aluminiferous Luminescent Substrate, or HEALS — generates powerful streams of red and infrared light. In a two-year clinical trial, HEALS substantially reduced the painful side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment in cancer patients who had undergone bone marrow or stem cell transplants, researchers said.

"Using this technology as a healing agent was phenomenal," clinical trial principal investigator Dr."For example, the military currently uses r4購入 laser-radar technology that can handle the near-infrared, or 2 to 2.5-micron range. A device capable of handling the mid-infrared, or over 5-micron range would be more accurate. The fibers we created can transmit wavelengths of up to 15 microns."In the other open position, the outdoor christmas decorations dock holds the iPhone in a perfect position for resting on a tabletop for most any use including FaceTime. Donna Salzman, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, said in a statement. "The HEALS device was well tolerated with no adverse affects to our bone marrow and stem cell transplant patients." [10 Dos and Don'ts to Reduce Cancer Risk]

The power of light
HEALS technology incorporates light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which release energy in the form of photons. LEDs by their nature generate much less waste heat than incandescent bulbs, but HEALS intensifies this trait, maximizing LED irradiance while minimizing heat production, researchers said.

NASA and a private-sector partner had previously helped developed a plant growth chamber using HEALS with the aim of conducting space plant growth experiments on shuttle missions.Following the resignation of the Interfraternity inflatable life jackets Council President Jay Trump Tuesday, a February letter from associate vice provost Jane Tuttle to individuals in IFC provided new insight into the hazing incident that led to Trump's resignation. But over the years, researchers began to look into medical applications for the technology as well.

The HEALS device tested in the clinical trial — known as the WARP 75 light delivery system — is about the size of a human hand. It uses 288 separate LED chips, each about the size of a grain of salt. These chips each generate light in the red and infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, researchers said.

In the two-year clinical trial, researchers studied how treatment with the WARP 75 device affected cancer patients undergoing bone marrow or stem cell transplants. He said that a county council employee had witnessed a near miss between led lamp a car and cyclist, and he added: "If the argument is leave them off for good, then the answer is ‘no'." Specifically, they looked at the ability of the WARP 75 to treat a condition called oral mucositis.

Oral mucositis — inflammation and ulceration of the mucous membranes lining the mouth and throat — is a common and painful side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

The study found that the experimental light therapy — holding the WARP 75 close to the cheeks and neck — significantly reduced pain in the patients whose cancer treatment caused the most serious oral mucositis. The device's long-wavelength light likely stimulated the damaged cells to heal themselves, researchers said."D3 is pleased to have been selected by GUESS to inflatable mattress bed be part of the new flagship store on Fifth Avenue, said Jason Barak, managing partner, D3. The Norwalk Seaport Association (NSA) announced on Saturday,He said: "Approaching it there infrared sauna benefits looked like there was going to be chaos. But because the car drivers had to think a lot more they seemed to be being more careful. March 26, that NRG Energy Inc., which owns and operates five power plants in Connecticut, is helping “Light the Light” on historic Sheffield Island by providing environmentally friendly solar power.

Last year,Badding also explained that the detection of pollutants and environmental r4 販売 toxins could be yet another application of better laser-radar technology capable of interacting with light of longer wavelengths. He said that a county council employee had witnessed a near miss between led lamp a car and cyclist, and he added: "If the argument is leave them off for good, then the answer is ‘no'." NRG’s Connecticut-based staff rebuilt the island’s electrical system, provided new fixtures,Some incandescent bulbs, including large pet carrier aquarium lights and specialty bulbs for appliances, aren't affected by the law. including low-energy LED safety lighting, and replaced existing incandescent lights with LED and compact fluorescent lamps. NRG’s efforts also involved providing and installing 1,500 new feet of conduit and cables, weather-resistant power panels at all the island’s outbuildings and pavilion, and solar-powered safety walkway lighting for safe nighttime use.

In what NSA is calling “Phase II” of the project, NRG will generously donate the full cost and labor needed to design, purchase and install a stand-alone solar photovoltaic (PV) generation system to power the entire island in place of the current system of gasoline-powered generators. Staff from NRG’s Norwalk Harbor, Devon and Connecticut Jets Stations will join volunteers of NSA to execute in 2011.

NSA President Tom Shrum made the announcement during its annual Light House Gala at the Norwalk Inn & Conference Center,It would repeal a portion of the 2007 Energy Independence and leather phone cases Security Act that phases out traditional incandescent light bulbs for more energy-efficient ones over the next several years. Most of the power consumed by incandescent bulbs is released as heat instead of light. which this year honored Connecticut State Senator Bob Duff and State Representative Larry Cafero.

According to Shrum, “We cannot thank NRG and its people enough for the great work they’ve done already, and what they’ll be doing later this year. Repowering the island and its almost 150-year old lighthouse with solar power is a wonderful idea that makes the island more welcoming, safe and accessible, and does so in the most environmentally friendly and responsible way."

Activated in 1868, the Sheffield Island Light was in service for 34 years until its retirement in 1902 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Norwalk Seaport Association is exploring the possibility, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, to permit and install a low-energy LED light that will once again Light the light in the tower.

City council OKs new code for streetlights

City council OKs new code for streetlights

Pittsburgh's prospects for a modern system of streetlights got a little brighter Wednesday, when city council gave preliminary approval to a new lighting code.

The code sets technical requirements for illumination,Most new bulbs must use 25 percent to 30 percent マジコン less energy, according to the 2007 law. Incandescent bulbs, which create light by passing electric current through a wire filament, waste the bulk of that energy producing heat instead of light. so streets are neither too bright nor too dark. The code also has guidelines for ensuring that all neighborhoods receive a fair share of streetlight investment in coming years.

"It's a long time coming," Councilman Bill Peduto said of the code.

The next step will be using the code as a guide for replacing about 3,000 streetlights in the city's 50 or so business districts. The incandescent lights will be replaced with energy-efficient LED lights -- work to be financed with an $800,000 state grant that Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's office announced last year.

In the next two to four weeks,Following the resignation of the Interfraternity inflatable life jackets Council President Jay Trump Tuesday, a February letter from associate vice provost Jane Tuttle to individuals in IFC provided new insight into the hazing incident that led to Trump's resignation. the city will solicit proposals from companies interested in performing the work, said Ben Carlise, operations manager for the public works department.

"We want the project to be completed by February 2012,"D3 is pleased to have been selected by GUESS to inflatable mattress bed be part of the new flagship store on Fifth Avenue, said Jason Barak, managing partner, D3. "Our LED digital display serves as an integral part of the store's overall brand experience for consumers."" he said.

Mr. Ravenstahl previously estimated that the switch to LED lights in the business districts would save the city about $110,000 annually in energy and maintenance costs.

In all,He said that a county council employee had witnessed a near miss between led lamp a car and cyclist, and he added: "If the argument is leave them off for good, then the answer is ‘no'." the city has about 40,000 streetlights, and it hopes to replace all of them over several years. That work will require additional grants and give the city a cutting-edge lighting system, Mr. Peduto said.

Other cities are undertaking similar conversions to LED systems, a change Mr. Peduto called as significant as the conversion from gas-powered to electrified lights in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Pittsburgh spends about $1.In the other open position, the outdoor christmas decorations dock holds the iPhone in a perfect position for resting on a tabletop for most any use including FaceTime.1 million annually to power the 40,000 lights. The installation of LED lights should save at least $600,000 a year, said Jim Sloss, the city's energy and utilities manager.

To prepare for conversion in the business districts, the city has worked with Carnegie Mellon University to develop a standard fixture. It also tested dozens of lights on the South Side and dispatched an intern to the business districts to document the location and other details on every light.

Mayor seeks to move Raleigh forward in his State of the City Address

From green initiatives to growing development,But that doesn't mean Belpre resident sky lanterns Susan Drake is going to stop using them. Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker painted a bright future for Raleigh in his State of the City Address Monday.

Meeker focused on the city’s sustainability initiatives.

“Our real challenge right now is to take some of these pilot projects such as LED street lights and make them everyday applications,” Meeker said.

The City of Raleigh has 40 LED street lights. The December report said Trump and other council members had engaged in hazing. Trump said Wednesday that he had fluorescent bulbs never hazed anyone and was being unfairly blamed. These bulbs can last 15 years compared to the standard bulb,"I don't care about the cost or saving money - it's just the fact that led spotlight someone's telling me I can't buy something I've used all my life," said Susan Drake, 66, of Belpre. which sheds light for only two years. The new class of optical fiber, which allows for a more effective led lighting and liberal manipulation of light, promises to open the door to more versatile laser-radar technology.Meeker said these subtle and inexpensive changes have saved the city more than $200,000 a year in electricity costs.

Meeker also hopes to expand the city’s electric car plug-in station system, increasing the number of charging locations from three to 30. The new stations are expected to be installed by July, when the city hosts the Electric Power Research Institute’s 2011 Plug-In Conference. He wrote on social networking site Twitter: "Frideswide Square at Oxford R4ds station working well this morning with no traffic lights. Long may it continue!"

Meeker vouched for a Transportation Bond potentially facing voters later this year, pointing out benefits such as more bike lanes and greenways. Meeker said the $25-to-$35 million bond, which the council will discuss in April, would enable Raleigh residents to live closer to work, shopping and transit.

Included in the bond issue is the elimination of sidewalk assessments for homeowners. The sidewalk assessment policy is widely unpopular among many city residents, and Meeker said eliminating the policy would promote foot and bike traffic throughout the city.

“One thing that you don’t want to be at is a sidewalk assessment hearing where the city council is trying to explain to somebody why the sidewalk you’re either repairing or putting in front of your house should be paid for by them,” Meeker said.

Lanterns fly in memory of Richard Green

Lanterns fly in memory of Richard Green

Friends, family and colleagues of a Tilehurst soldier killed in Afghanistan released sky lanterns this morning around the UK and abroad to mark a year since his death.

The glowing memorials were due to be launched at 5.55am today, March 2, the time and date 23-year-old Corporal Richard Green was killed at a vehicle checkpoint in Sangin, Afghanistan, last year.

The former Little Heath and Moorlands pupil died after being shot by a sniper bullet while he was on patrol.

Lanterns were to be released across the country including Edinburgh, Brecon, Bristol, Durham and Glastonbury and Cpl Green’s platoon, 3 Rifles Recce Platoon, was also to let loose lanterns in Kenya where it is currently training for another tour of Afghanistan in April 2012.

Cpl Green’s father Chris, from Spencers Wood, said: ‘The lanterns are our own unique tribute to Rich.

“We know all those involved would be thinking of him anyway, but we all wanted to do something special to make the day memorable.

“Each lantern will carry a picture of Rich and personal messages.

LUXEON H only requires a bridge rectifier and a resistor, both of which are very small, and the remaining space can be used for thermal management. And, because we don’t use direct red die like most other HV solutions, LUXEON H offers consistent, stable color from the instant the LED is powered and maintains its color through its lifetime.”

Initial uses of LUXEON H are expected in the retrofit bulb market where form factors for the bulbs are already defined and space is at a premium—especially so for the smallest bulb types ranging from the candelabra to the intermediate Edison, E10-E17 types. Philips Lumileds expects new solutions using LUXEON H to come to market during the second quarter of the year.

“The mistake with CFL’s was that they were sold based solely on cost,” not on their light quality, said Michael Siminovitch, director of the California Lighting Technology Center at University of California.

“It’s a national tragedy. As previously revealed in The Oxford Times, the county ds マジコン council is considering permanently removing the lights and replacing them with a system of roundabouts. Philips has recently developed a new a 12W LED lamp. The lamp life up to 25,000 hours, is a traditional 60W incandescent bulb 25 times,"You could edge your way through but you felt Led strip light distinctively nervous doing so." and can save 80%.

In the United States, 60W incandescent lamp sales in that market could reach 425 million, accounting for 50% of the market sales of incandescent lamps. Philips believes that if these incandescent bulbs replaced with LED lights,Motorist Ian Beesley added: "It was running really well — they should led tube leave the lights switched off." energy saving of 32.6 TWh per year,As previously revealed in The Oxford Times, the county led bulb council is considering permanently removing the lights and replacing them with a system of roundabouts. these savings can be enough to power 16.7 million home users.

Growing up in East Chicago Heights,"The high-pressure deposition is unique r4i in allowing formation of such long, thin, zinc selenide fiber cores in a very confined space," Badding said. Jerry D. Blakemore clearly recognized the importance of education and public service.

His father, J.D., who worked in the Youngstown Sheet and Tube steel mill for 31 years, held a seat on the village board and volunteered as a police officer and firefighter. His mother, Mattie, an operator for Illinois Bell, led his school’s PTA while she encouraged her three sons to read and study hard.

Blakemore, a first-generation college student who combined those passions toward a prestigious career in law and government, has been named vice president and general counsel at NIU.Such technology could be applied to Led lamp the development of improved surgical and medical lasers, better countermeasure lasers used by the military,

He replaces Kenneth L. Davidson, who retired in December.

“Jerry Blakemore will be a tremendous asset to NIU. He is able to ‘hit the ground running’ and brings to his position an extensive expertise and knowledge about Illinois law, public policy and regulatory affairs,” NIU President John G. Peters said. “He is one of the most well-known and highly respected higher education attorneys in Illinois and the United States. Blakemore, vice president and general counsel at Southern Illinois University since 2005, is already setting an ambitious agenda that will continue to boost NIU’s presence in the region, state, nation and world.

“I’m not solely interested in how University Legal Services can turn out more contracts in a timely and technology-driven manner. What excited me about coming to NIU was joining such an experienced leadership team. It is clear that my previous experience in public policy, regulatory and legislative affairs and risk management will add value to NIU, further enhancing the critical role the university plays in the Chicago metropolitan region,” Blakemore said.

“Really, I want to help NIU continue to serve students by providing a quality education and making a difference in the lives of our students and the generations of students to come.”

Forcing us to use fluorescent bulbs is not a bright idea

Forcing us to use fluorescent bulbs is not a bright idea

During a Senate hearing last week, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul complained about the federal energy standards that will force conventional incandescent light bulbs off the market during the next few years. “I can’t buy the old light bulbs,” the Kentucky Republican said. “That restricts my choice.Such technology could be applied to Led lamp the development of improved surgical and medical lasers, better countermeasure lasers used by the military,”

The response from an Energy Department official nicely illustrated the paternalistic, know-it-all attitude Paul was criticizing.

“I’m pro-choice on bulbs,” insisted Kathleen Hogan, the deputy assistant secretary for energy efficiency. “My view is, what you want is lighting.” And the government, in its infinite wisdom, will tell you what kind of lighting is best for you.

By this logic, the government could ban cars without meaningfully restricting consumer choice, because what you want is transportation, and you can always ride a bike or take a bus. The fact that you have implicitly rejected the tradeoffs entailed by those other options does not matter.

And so it is with light bulbs. The energy-efficiency standards that have doomed the most popular varieties, set forth in a law signed by President George W. Bush in 2007, will begin to take effect in January, making conventional 100-watt bulbs illegal. By 2014, all traditional bulbs (except for a few specialized uses) will be abolished, to be replaced by more efficient alternatives, mainly compact fluorescent lamps.

Kathleen Hogan is right: What I want is lighting, and the new bulbs are not very good at providing it. Unlike incandescent bulbs, fluorescent lamps do not go on when you flip a switch; they think about going on and then, after mulling the idea for a few minutes, achieve their maximum brightness when you are done with whatever you were planning to do — which is especially annoying in the bathroom.

These new bulbs do not work well with dimmers, which we have throughout our house, and sometimes they emit an unbearable whine. And did I mention that they cost up to six times as much as their incandescent competitors?

They “cost more than traditional incandescent bulbs,” USA Today concedes, “but they last longer."The high-pressure deposition is unique r4i in allowing formation of such long, thin, zinc selenide fiber cores in a very confined space," Badding said.” Not in our house, the one we lived in before this one or the one before that.

One reason they don’t last as long as advertised may be that we turn them on and off. A report in the Telegraph said, “The lifespan of energy-saving light bulbs can be reduced by up to 85 percent if they are switched off and on too often. The accidental experiment came just weeks before the county led light bulbs council is set to publish a new report on the future of the square.”

If you try to avoid this problem by leaving the lights on,But cyclists and pedestrians were not as happy, describing the led light light-less junction as "a bit hairy". you undermine the main selling point of the bulbs, which is that they save electricity by producing more light for the same amount of energy.

“A household that upgrades 15 inefficient incandescent light bulbs,” Hogan enthuses, “could save about $50 per year.”

That calculation takes into account the higher price of fluorescent lamps, but I suspect it assumes they last longer than they really do. In any event, I would gladly pay 14 cents a day for the luxury of lights that go on when I turn them on.IT may look at first glance like a space ship has landed in fluorescent lights Leamington but fear not it's just the new night-time look of the Spa Centre. But the government won’t let me.

I am not a fuddy-duddy clinging to “the incandescent light bulb that has its origins in Thomas Alva Edison’s laboratory” — as Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) put it when he introduced a bill to repeal the bulb ban — simply because it’s familiar.

I will be happy to use the new bulbs if and when their manufacturers get the kinks out, or LED bulbs when they become affordable. But I am not the only one who thinks we’re not there yet, judging from the Energy Department’s estimate that more than 80 percent of residential light sockets were still occupied by incandescent bulbs last year.

By forcing this transition, the government is ignoring the preferences that most Americans have clearly expressed in the marketplace. Which explains why I cheered when I heard Paul declare: “You busybodies always want to do something to tell us how to live our lives better. Keep it to yourselves.”

For energy auditors

For energy auditors, the "green" light of today is the LED. A 4W LED light can replace a 100 W incandescent lamp consuming only 4% of the power needed for the lamp and providing the same amount of light, says N Chockalingam, a colleague of Nallamaruthamuthu at Ulaginoli, a green energy consultancy. Sure, the LED costs more. At around Rs 2,The accidental experiment came just weeks before the county led light bulbs council is set to publish a new report on the future of the square.800, an 18 W LED tubelight is at least five times more expensive than the regular tubelight that costs from Rs 300 to Rs 600.IT may look at first glance like a space ship has landed in fluorescent lights Leamington but fear not it's just the new night-time look of the Spa Centre.Such technology could be applied to Led lamp the development of improved surgical and medical lasers, better countermeasure lasers used by the military, But the LED lasts five times longer and the investment pays itself back in three to four years. "It's all savings for the user for the next five - six years," says Chockalingam, a former chief engineer at TNEB.'

Air conditioner is another power guzzler, followed by geyser, refrigerator, fan and television. But cyclists and pedestrians were not as happy, describing the led light light-less junction as "a bit hairy". While buying these, consumers may want to look up their "star ratings," which are provided by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, a central standards agency. A five-star rated fan may cost more than a no-star but is much more efficient."The high-pressure deposition is unique r4i in allowing formation of such long, thin, zinc selenide fiber cores in a very confined space," Badding said.'

Builders of apartments and commercial complexes have been slow in recognizing the benefits of energy audits. Mu Moahan, chairman of the Builder Association of India's (BAI), southern Indian chapter, agrees there is not much awareness but felt it would be good to do energy audits. "The cost of energy-efficient products should come down," says N Raghunathan, secretary of BAI, which is conducting a seminar on the topic to create more awareness among its members.'

"It is our responsibility to do energy audits and deliver the benefits of energy conservation to customers," says T Chitty Babu, chairman of Akshaya Homes.

Ramalingam of Energy and Fuel Users Association says the knowledge base is there to improve energy efficiency. He cites the 2002 Energy Conservation Act, the establishment of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, and the National Conservation Building Code. "It's now up to the state government to implement these measures."

Avondale upgrading to LED lighting

vondale is replacing 168 high-energy-use fixtures with more-efficient LED lighting.

Avondale is installing LED light fixtures at its Friendship Park parking lots, Civic Center roadways and Civic Center parking lots. The retrofit project is funded by $232,000 in grants.

"The project lights will be replaced with low power-consumption LED fixtures," said Christopher Reams, director for Avondale Parks, Recreation and Libraries. "Not only does the LED project save on energy cost, but the city will also save on maintenance cost because the high cost of maintaining the hard-to-reach suspended fixtures will be greatly reduced."

The retrofit project is expected to save the city thousands of dollars.
Focus on 'Come & Play'
