A Florida firm developing LED lights to replace incandescent and fluorescent bulbs will move some production to New York from China, officials said Wednesday.

The Leds America Inc. move to a converted Kingston, N.Y., IBM Corp. campus known as TechCity will add some 100 manufacturing jobs within 12 months, officials said.

Leds is "really taking a bold move" in moving its light-emitting diode technology and manufacturing capabilities to New York from China, but the company "sees value in 'Made in America,'" said Vincent Cozzolino, president of the Solar Energy Consortium, a non-profit Kingston center seeking to expedite the adoption of solar energy in the United States and create a solar research-and-development and manufacturing cluster in New York state.

The move "proves that what we are doing is working," said U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y., who has played a key role in expanding the solar-technology sector in New York's Hudson Valley region north of New York City.Using an urpail to light a room gives choice a deal of choice to the homeowner with a variety of options available, such as coloured LED bulbs to create different lighting effects within the home from what you would typically find.So many people have their own collections of trinkets or memorabilia reedabc that they wish to show off that it makes sense to display it in the best way possible. Leds will begin prototype lighting-system manufacturing shortly and full production next year, officials quoted by the Mid-Hudson News Network said.

The company announced in July two LED semiconductor technologies intended to replace standard incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs.

A 6-watt LED light bulb with a lumen output equivalent to that of a 60-watt standard bulb will save 90 percent of the standard bulb's energy use and 50 percent of that of a comparable compact fluorescent lamp, the company said.

Moving to Samsung TVs

Edge-Lit LED Backlighting Moving to Samsung TVs

A new product is slated to come out of the Samsung labs and into the market soon. Samsung is reportedly beginning the mass production of its new HDTV; the kind that's so thin, it can be hung on the wall like a painting. The difference between this new product and the usual ultra-thin HDTVs? Samsung's lightweight super-thin TV utilizes a technology that allows it to consume up to 40 percent less what a conventional TV of the same size and capacity consumes. So many people have their own collections of trinkets or memorabilia reedabc that they wish to show off that it makes sense to display it in the best way possible. This means that being able to shine a light directly onto the main point of interest is a fantastic way to lead people to something that you want them to see. The savings in energy are due to its LED backlighting. But while it's natural to think the LED lights themselves save energy, there's actually one more factor that contributes to its efficiency - the LED lighting's placement on the LCD.

Samsung's new HDTV uses edge-lit LED backlighting that places LED lights in rows on the top and the bottom of the panel.

In this position, the light is directed or focused towards the center of the screen for better picture quality and lesser energy use. The LEDs used for the backlighting are, of course, mercury-free as well. "There is a rising demand for light weight large TVs that can be mounted on the wall like a painting, with LED backlighting as a higher quality alternative to the more common CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) technology," said W. K. Chang, president of Samsung Electronics LCD Division.

Samsung's new HDTV will come in 40-inch, 46-inch and 55-inch diagonal size models when they are released to the public. There is also the sense of pride and achievement that can come omegafake from putting together an element of your house by yourself. All of these factors would give anyone a serious reason to consider the downlight kit method of installing these low voltage lights.

The D935VX and D940VX

The D935VX and D940VX are nearly twins with essentially identical features except for their brightness ratings – at 3,000 lumens for the D935VX, and 4,300 lumens for the D940VX. Both are aimed at home, business, or school use,Decorating is a talent that not everyone has. So, if you are lacking in this talent, hire a professional. The short throw also helps avoid casting shadows from people walking between the projector and the screen, which is helpful in classrooms, for example. The D930TX is rated at 3000 lumens and, according to Vivitek, will be available in the first quarter of 2009, for $2199 (list).

Designed for larger classrooms and boardrooms, the D735VX offers a rated brightness of 3,200 lumens and a built-in 3 watt speaker system. Probably its most interesting feature, however,Let's look at the cost savings of using an urmoon such as the Cree LR6 more closely. is the removable control panel. Like car radios that let you take the front panel with you to discourage thieves, the D735VX lets you take its control panel and leave the projector behind, with no way to use it. Rated at 5500 lumens, the D5500 is Vivitek's first projector designed for permanent installation in large auditoriums, lecture halls, houses of worship, and the like. Thanks to dual lamps, if one lamp fails mid-meeting, the projector can automatically switch to single lamp operation to avoid interruptions. Vivitek says the D5500 is available now for $5,999 (list).

comparing brightness results

When comparing brightness results, remember that the perception of brightness is roughly logarithmic, which means an image that looks twice as bright is actually ten times as bright in lumens. It also means that the difference between 92 and 115 lumens isn't all that much. I found the GP1 to be easily bright enough for images at 1.5 meters (59 inches) across in a darkened room, arguably bright enough at 1.8 meters (71 inches), but a little too dim for extended viewing at 2 meters (79 inches) across. Most conventional downlights use a standard 65-watt incandescent compact fluorescent lights and are run on a switch that typically contains several downlights. For this example we'll say there are a total of six lights on a switch.

Our suite of DisplayMate tests (www.displaymate.com) turned up some minor flaws in image quality, most notably a color balance problem, with some shades of gray showing a distinct green tint and others showing a pink tint. In addition, small font sizes (smaller than you should use in a presentation) were virtually unreadable. Keep in mind, however,The initial cost of purchasing this and similar products is rakeabc insignificant when put into perspective, and the benefits to your pocketbook and the environment will be clearly seen and felt. that the test images are designed to make problems stand out if they exist at all. These aren't major issues for real-world use.

Worth mentioning in particular is that the GP1 shows very little of the rainbow effect common with DLP projectors, with bright areas breaking up into little red-green-blue rainbows when you shift your gaze or an object moves on screen. Some people are more sensitive to this effect than others, but however sensitive you are, there is less of it with the GP1 than with most DLP projectors.

On our video tests, the GP1 lost detail in dark areas on screen but did a reasonably good job with flesh tones. On the HQV Benchmark test, which measures how well a projector handles standard-definition video, it scored 63 out of a possible 130, a midrange score for a business projector.Currently the LR6 sells for around $90, so we'll spend about $540 to install them (they can be installed as a direct reelabc replacement to standard downlights, no special tools needed) and our total cost will be $900 over the 50,000 hour period. In short, it won't give you image quality as high as that of as most LCD TVs, but it will give you decent quality and a larger image size than that of most TVs.

One surprise was how loud the audio was for such a small projector—easily enough to fill a small conference room. Unfortunately, the quality was a little off, with a "sounds like it's coming from the bottom of a barrel" echo effect. The GP1 is certainly good enough for games or background music in presentations, but for watching, say, a movie, to hear all the words you'll want to connect it to an external sound system.

The GP1 is also the first projector to earn the PCMag GreenTech Approved seal.Indirect lighting offers an interesting and eye catching form meal2010 of light from concealed source. Strip light is an example of indirect lighting that is often installed on top of cabinets. This adds to the general lighting of the room. It also helps those who gucciblet live there accomplished and complete tasks that require good light. it uses lead-free glass for its lens system, includes an automatic power-off feature, and is RoHS compliant. BenQ also has a recycling program in place, as well as a trade-in program. The recycling program includes free shipping in some states, although in most states you have to pay for shipping.

The BenQ Joybee GP1 offers more than enough to make it a strong contender for business travelers who want extreme portability and for home users who want to project video games at a large size or watch the occasional movie. It's bright, has reasonably good image quality with very little rainbow effect, and includes audio. Moreover, you don't need to a carry a computer or video source to be able to use it—just a USB key.

Projector Line at CES

Casio Announces Mercury-free High-Brightness Projector Line at CES

Today at CES, Casio announced a line of projectors—based on a hybrid laser and LED light source the company has developed—that are mercury-free yet capable of high (2,000 to 3,000 lumens) brightness levels. Casio's Green Slim projectors will be available in a diverse lineup, including a model that can accommodate WXGA Real display at 1,Currently the LR6 sells for around $90, so we'll spend about $540 to install them (they can be installed as a direct reelabc replacement to standard downlights, no special tools needed) and our total cost will be $900 over the 50,000 hour period.280-by-800 dpi (a 16:10 aspect ratio) and a model that can project without a PC and can communicate wirelessly with PCs.

The Green Slim line's light source uses blue light emitted by a blue laser, green light converted from blue laser light with a fluorescent element, and light emitted by a high-lumen red LED through a DLP chip onto the screen.

The Green Slim projectors are portable at 1.7 by 11 by 8.5 inches (HWD) and 5 pounds. According to Casio, the laser and LED hybrid light source improves color purity compared with high-pressure mercury lamps. The light source's life is approximately 20,000 hours—nearly 10 times that of Casio's conventional products. Projection at maximum brightness is possible in a minimum of eight seconds, and no cool down is needed when turning the projectors off. These models come with a wide-angle 2X optical zoom lens. Most conventional downlights use a standard 65-watt incandescent compact fluorescent lights and are run on a switch that typically contains several downlights. For this example we'll say there are a total of six lights on a switch. They are also equipped with a feature that automatically corrects vertical distortion of the display due to projector position, enabling effective use in diverse settings ranging from small meeting spaces to large conference rooms and classrooms.

These models are equipped with an HDMI terminal. Four of the models (XJ-A255/250/A245/A240) are able to accommodate WXGA Real display at 1,280 by 800 dots (a 16:10 aspect ration), enabling them to display wide presentation materials and images in real size. Four models (XJ-A255/A245/A155/A145) can communicate wirelessly (via 802.11b/g WiFi) with up to four Windows PCs, enabling meetings in which multiple PCs are brought together and presentations that can be conducted easily and remotely from a location away from the projector.Indirect lighting offers an interesting and eye catching form meal2010 of light from concealed source. Our Rating System

Our Rating System
The first requirement for any projector to earn a PCMag GreenTech Approved seal is that the company rating has to be above a defined minimum, on the grounds that the company's overall environmental behavior has to be factored into the ultimate impact of any individual product. Assuming the company passes that threshold, there are some absolute requirements for the projector as well: It must be RoHS compliant; its packaging must use only or primarily biodegradable and recyclable materials; and there must be a recycling program in place for the projector. In addition, for projectors with traditional light sources, lens components must be made from lead-free glass, and the projector must use lead-free solder throughout.Ambient lighting provides for the general illumination of the room. Natural daylight and high overhead manufactured compact fluorescent light bulbs lighting such as ceiling, recessed, track or mounted fixtures are some sources of ambient lighting.

World's Smallest Projector Set for Launch

Just 12 months after demonstrating a working prototype of the world's smallest projector, Redmond, Wash.-based Microvision is unveiling a fully functioning, self-contained prototype that should be available as a real product—possibly from Motorola—later this year.

Dubbed SHOW, the lensless PicoP projector is designed for home and business use, and uses tiny lasers to shoot a WVGA (848 by 480, roughly DVD resolution) image on virtually any surface that isn't a dark color or textured. It can even project onto curved and uneven surfaces. From a distance of two feet, it could project a two-foot diagonal, full-color image on a white T-shirt. From five feet away, it could show a five-foot image on, say, a white wall or ceiling.

"It's a great for-use mode when it comes to spontaneously sharing content with your friends," said Russell Hannigan,Now, we all know that a typical diode can output a very limited amount of light, so how does our Phillips chauvet dj lighting work? GE makes 100-watt-equivalent LED

GE makes 100-watt-equivalent LED

General Electric Co. says scientists have developed a prototype LED bulb that incorporates jet-engine cooling techniques to cast as much light as a 100-watt halogen lamp while using one-third as much energy.

The LED bulb gives off the benchmark 1,500 lumens, the halogen-bulb standard, and it's half the weight and size of a 600-lumen LED light marketed today, GE said in a statement. The bulb was developed by GE's global research and lighting units with the University of Maryland, using a two-year Department of Energy grant.

GE, the world's largest jet-engine maker, focused on reducing temperature, noise and size, said Mehmet Arik, principal investigator on the LED project for six years.

"It's a big issue," Arik said. "We have to make it as small as possible, as quiet as possible, minimum power consumption and something that also makes no noise. Our Phillips railabc, aside saving you money on electricity bills (is 6 to 8 times more efficient than your standard incandescent bulbs), can also generate various colors of light."

LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, rely on semiconductors to create light, rather than heating a filament. Current LED bulbs, usually encased in a ceramic or plastic housing, burn one-fourth of the electricity of a comparable incandescent and last 25 times longer, GE has said.Learn more about each sauna's benefits and then choose rake2010 what is best for you. More than just LED

Lightbulb wars: More than just LED

But cost is a serious barrier to the adoption of LEDs. GE expects that its 40-watt equivalent will cost about $50, according to a company representative. Philips will be selling a 60-watt equivalent,Enter the LED downlight, one of the best led bulb solutions available and a prime example of how LED lighting is going to revolutionize the lighting industry. which gives off over 800 lumens, through Home Depot starting in December with a price tag between $40 and $50.

"There's no source that's going to beat everything. LEDs are great for certain things but...I really don't think in my lifetime we'll see a stadium lit with LEDs."
--Michael Myer, researcher, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

There's also concern in the industry that shoddy LED bulbs aimed at consumers are flooding the market. "Some days it feels little bit like wild, wild west,Countertops are areas where food preparation is often done. These are often illuminated with shallow supplyforyou fluorescent fixtures that are attached to the cabinet's underside." said Strainic. "We've seen it before--products come into marketplace when products really aren't ready."

Consumer education is going to be particularly important in the years ahead, which makes labeling of general lighting products far more important than in the past. The U.S. Department of Energy is developing an EnergyStar certification for LED bulbs, and new bulbs now use a Lighting Facts label that includes information on lumens, lumens per watt, color temperature, and color-rendering index.

Competition in LEDs, in particular, appears to be heating up with both newcomers and incumbent lighting providers racing to drive costs down. But manufacturers still aren't turning their backs on old technologies.

GE will devote about half of its lighting research budget this year to solid-state lighting, but it will continue manufacturing fluorescent lights, including a hybrid halogen-CFL. It's also investing in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) lighting, which can be printed onto sheets of plastic, and seeking good applications for it.

Special streetlights to be tested in Dawson

Special streetlights to be tested in Dawson

“We need to find out if they are a good lighting option for a community such as Dawson City, which typically has colder and darker winters than locations further south.”

Dawson residents will be invited to provide feedback on the performance of the LED technology.

If the streetlights work, Yukon Energy would look at installing them in the three major communities it serves – Dawson, Mayo and Faro.

The test lights will also be fitted with a backlight shield to reduce the amount of light pollution into the night sky.

Patterson said while the LED streetlights cost $800, or four times the $200 cost for regular lights, they generally last four times longer and use about 40 per cent less energy.

“Again, we will be monitoring this over the winter to see if that is indeed the case,Now, we all know that a typical diode can output a very limited amount of light, so how does our Phillips chauvet dj lighting work? Well, it finds strength in numbers.” Patterson said.

Yukon Energy is working with Yukon Electrical and the territorial government to look at ways to increase efficiencies and reduce consumption.

Yukon Energy provides the bulk of generation in the territory, and Yukon Electrical is responsible for most of the distribution networks and streetlighting.

Yukon Energy, for instance,Countertops are areas where food preparation is often done. These are often illuminated with shallow supplyforyou fluorescent fixtures that are attached to the cabinet's underside. manages about 650 streetlights while Yukon Electrical has about 6,000 in its inventory, approximately 4,300 of which are located in Whitehorse.

The privately-owned utility has installed 24 LED lights in four areas of the city.

Wayne Tonsi, manager of customer service for Yukon Electrical, said the selected streets – Valleyview, Jarvis Street,Any type of muscle pain, stiffness is relieved deck lighting with the warm heat therapy from the traditional sauna. The heat from the sauna will increase blood flow to the joints and muscles too. Diabetic patients often have this problem with diabetic neuropathy in the feet and hands, so this is good for their circulation. Donjek Road and Tatchun Road – were chosen because they are relatively low-traffic streets.

Just as Dawson residents will be invited to provide feedback on the lights, so too will be the residents living near LEDs installed in Whitehorse, he said.

“We will be distributing a questionnaire to customers in those specific areas to facilitate that feedback,” Tonsi said in a news release last week.

“We are excited about this pilot project and look forward to hearing from our customers.Enter the LED downlight, one of the best led bulb solutions available and a prime example of how LED lighting is going to revolutionize the lighting industry.”

The service manager said it’s too early to discuss how quickly a transition might occur, or what a new fee structure might look like for municipalities, given the higher cost of LED lights initially, lower cost for energy and the lights’ longer life.

Those types of details will come later, once the utilities have had a chance to test the viability of the product in the North,Larger kitchens may require one or more ceiling fixtures positioned in the center of the room. Additional perimeter fluorescent bulbs squares or rectangles of lights placed near the walls should be installed for added illumination. These can be in the form of recessed downlight or track lighting. On the other hand, small kitchens may require only either two or three ceiling mounted fixtures or downlight placed near the walls. he said.

Tonsi said the pilot program is expected to go for the next six to eight months, but could go longer if this winter’s weather doesn’t present normal conditions – if it’s warmer than usual, for instance.

Generally, he pointed out, it costs municipalities about $180 per street light every year, of which $75 is for electricity and the remainder for operation and maintenance.

Altogether, Yukoners pay about $1.4 million annually to light up their streets, said Patterson.

The Yukon government’s Energy Solutions Centre is contributing $2,000 to help offset the $21,000 cost of Yukon Energy’s initiative in Dawson City, Colin McDowell, the centre’s director, said today.

He said the centre is contributing $4,000 toward Yukon Electrical’s $32,500 cost for the Whitehorse pilot program.

LED lights growing in Knoxville

Brass: LED lights growing in Knoxville

Knoxville's nights could go from orange to white if tests of new LED fixtures now dotting the landscape prove the new technology's muster.

LED streetlights are beginning to mark the Knoxville horizon with their white glow.

Thirty new LED fixtures were recently installed on Blount Avenue and in the Cityview development along the South Knoxville waterfront. It's the second of three test LED installations planned by the city and KUB as they continue to move toward greener lighting. Most conventional downlights use a standard 65-watt incandescent compact fluorescent lights and are run on a switch that typically contains several downlights. For this example we'll say there are a total of six lights on a switch. Demand for LED, or light-emitting diode, technology is growing for municipalities with their promise of a bulb life of five to 10 years compared to the usual two- to three-year lifespan for traditional outdoor light fixtures.

One year ago, the city and KUB — in partnership with TVA and the Electric Power Research Institute — installed 12 lamps along Wall Avenue as part of a broader project to test a variety of LED products offered by competitors that have sprung up across the nation, aiming to tap the growing LED market. The next installation will be eight streetlights along Market Street, where existing sidewalks and streetlights will be torn up to make room for new ones, according to Gabriel Bolas, manager of the engineering systems group at KUB.

'For the last couple of years LEDs have kind of become the hot thing because they last longer, and they do save energy,Larger kitchens may require one or more ceiling fixtures positioned in the center of the room. Additional perimeter fluorescent bulbs squares or rectangles of lights placed near the walls should be installed for added illumination. These can be in the form of recessed downlight or track lighting. On the other hand, small kitchens may require only either two or three ceiling mounted fixtures or downlight placed near the walls.' Bolas said. 'The manufacturers tell you all this crazy stuff, but we just want to prove it in the field for a while.Enter the LED downlight, one of the best led bulb solutions available and a prime example of how LED lighting is going to revolutionize the lighting industry. … Public safety is what it comes down to. It's a big deal for us to make this change.'

More communities such as Knoxville are starting to dabble in LED, according to Jack O'Hanlon, whose company the O'Hanlon Group sold the fixtures for the waterfront development.

'There's a lot of people who are embracing this in different parts of the country, and there's a lot of people saying, ‘Let's wait a little bit,' ' he said. 'LED has become incredibly practical, and the cost has come down and will continue to come down.'

LED has been more quickly adopted in retail and commercial settings in recent years, but Knoxville is one of a handful of cities across the country launching LED initiatives for streetlight applications, according to Bolas.

'Costs are a big factor, no doubt about it,' he said. Knoxville is home to approximately 30,000 streetlights, and LEDs cost two to three times as much as traditional high-pressure sodium fixtures with their signature orange glow. The Led strip light will concentrate its light downwards into the room and has the capability to shine as broadly as a floodlight or as narrowly as a spot light, the choice is really yours. Our Phillips railabc, aside saving you money on electricity bills (is 6 to 8 times more efficient than your standard incandescent bulbs), can also generate various colors of light.

But, Bolas said, 'the bigger thing for us is that this survives the conditions of the streets. … We know what an incandescent bulb does. (LED is) just a different animal.'

For example, LEDs don't burn out immediately but degrade over time, and the utility will need to learn at what point they're no longer doing the job and need to be replaced.

In order for the new technology to pay off at current prices with reduced maintenance and energy costs, the bulbs must last about five years, he said. But the city and KUB likely would only wait another year — 'two years tops,' Bolas said — to begin replacing Knoxville's current streetlights with LEDs.

'The technology is getting more sophisticated every day,' he said. 'These companies are getting extremely mature with the product really fast. … Every time we look at them, they come down (in price) a little more.'

Old Torrance to add decorative lights, farmers market to mix

The lights will be strung from the palm trees lining El Prado between Cravens Avenue and the courtyard where El Prado dead ends just beyond Sartori Avenue.

The farmers market, which will feature up to 20 booths selling produce only, will sit beneath the twinkling lights between Sartori and the courtyard. It will operate from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays

The city recently installed removable bollards at El Prado and Sartori, allowing El Prado to be blocked off temporarily for outdoor concerts and other events.

"The goal is to increase (foot) traffic during the slower (midweek) nights of the downtown," said Brian Sunshine, the assistant to the city manager in charge of economic development downtown.

The City Council, acting as the Redevelopment Agency,The Led strip light will concentrate its light downwards into the room and has the capability to shine as broadly as a floodlight or as narrowly as a spot light, the choice is really yours. unanimously approved both projects at its Tuesday meeting.

Chef Michael Shafer, owner of The Depot restaurant on the east side of Cabrillo Avenue who more recently opened the Buffalo Fire Department eatery across the street, pushed city officials to approve the two initiatives.

He has emerged as an advocate of economic development in Old Torrance since opening the latter restaurant,Most conventional downlights use a standard 65-watt incandescent compact fluorescent lights and are run on a switch that typically contains several downlights. businesses have opened in recent months in Old Torrance and more are planned.

A Mexican restaurant called the Tortilla Cantina recently opened in a former antique store at the corner of El Prado and Sartori and a sandwich shop has set up shop in the courtyard opposite the Buffalo Fire Department, as well as several small boutiques on nearby streets.

A bar and grill, along with a wine shop, are expected to open in the coming months.Larger kitchens may require one or more ceiling fixtures positioned in the center of the room.

Thursday night farmers markets have successfully enlivened downtowns in other cities, including San Luis Obispo on the Central Coast, which is considered the model for such events.

That market regularly draws thousands to that city's historic downtown, and other cities have adopted similar formats.

Shafer said he hopes to start small and eventually incorporate arts and crafts booths, acoustic musical performances and the like into the Thursday night farmers market.

Nearby Wilson Park already hosts a farmers market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. The latter is considered one of the largest and best in Southern California. To begin with, they will make an impact in the decor of the room. Plus, this lighting is fantastic, lending more natural led lights which is always welcomed in any home.

City officials are continuing to focus on the old downtown with the approach in 2012 of the community's centennial celebrations.

The eventual goal is to string lights along Sartori as well, which together with El Prado is considered the heart of historic Old Torrance and will be the hub of festivities.

The infrastructure for similar lighting along Sartori is absent, however. City officials hope to find a solution to install the overhead lighting on or before the first quarter of next year.

"It should add some ambiance to the area," said Councilman Tom Brewer.Enter the LED downlight, one of the best led bulb solutions available and a prime example of how LED lighting is going to revolutionize the lighting industry.

The cost of the lights along El Prado is estimated at about $52,000. The money will come from the city's Economic Development Reserve Fund.

Yesterday we showed you some great ways to carve the ultimate pumpkin, but what good is the ultimate pumpkin without some awesome illumination? Today we take a look at different ways you can illuminate your Halloween masterpiece.

The traditional method of pumpkin illumination is the tiny tea light candle. While there's nothing wrong with tea lights for brief and temporary illumination, they have their limitations. And they should be balanced out throughout the space. Avoid living with only ladieshoody one general light fixture, which is often fixed in the center of the room. Read over the following list for some ideas on how you can illuminate your pumpkins.

If you'll only be lighting your pumpkin on Halloween night, you'll be fine to use a candle. It has that warm flickering glow that everyone loves. You can even rub ground cinnamon and nutmeg onto the roof and lid of your pumpkin so it wafts a great fall scent out as the candle burns. The downside to candles is that they are unsuitable for extended use (if you burn candles in your pumpkins for every night of the week leading up to Halloween the heat will dry out your pumpkin and char the inside of the flesh) and they're a potential fire hazard (however remote a risk they pose).

Whether you buy a Halloween-specific light like this battery powered LED puck or you just grab some LED tap lights from the lighting aisle of the hardware store, LEDs offer a great way to get bright light safely, cheaply,Enter the LED downlight, one of the best led bulb solutions available and a prime example of how LED lighting is going to revolutionize the lighting industry.Firms are aware of the economic pressures that are memo-pad placed on consumers nowadays and recognise there is an importance in obtaining value for money. and without the risk of heating up your pumpkin. White LEDs are the brightest and best suited for pumpkins where the surface has been carved away but the carving hasn't penetrated into the inner cavity of the pumpkin (the bright light will glow nicely through the pumpkin flesh). If you have a pumpkin with traditional all-the-way-through carving, look for Halloween-specific lights that are yellow-tinted and/or flickering to create a real-candle illusion.

deadline extended

Licking County Courthouse lighting fundraising deadline extended

The campaign originally was scheduled to close Oct. 15, said Jay Barker, Licking County Courthouse Lighting Committee president.

Some major contributors have scaled back their support this year.Health issues are one of the main reasons that people led spotlight use saunas. If you have been thinking about purchasing one to improve your health issues, you might have made a good decision. The debate over which type, infrared sauna vs traditional saunas should be used, is dependent on what ailment you are trying to relieve. Efforts are under way to replace those donations, organizers said.

Barker pointed to the economy as the No. 1 factor behind why people are more selective with their donations.

"Hopefully, the community will be there and we will be able to continue in the manner and tradition people are accustomed to," Barker said. "We are contacting contributors we have not heard from, and we are also making inquiries for new donors."

The lighting committee also announced it will continue the conversion of the lighting design to be more energy-efficient.

In 2009, the committee started the multi-year conversion of the incandescent light bulbs to new LED bulbs.

The LED conversion will be a significant financial investment -- incandescent bulbs cost 20 cents,While not all current LED replacement bulbs live up to their claims, products like the Cree LR6 table lamps Downlight provide you with beautiful warm white light, an 85% energy savings over conventional incandescent bulbs and a 50,000 hour life span. whereas LED bulbs cost $1.19 -- but will reduce the project's energy costs.

The LED bulbs also are stronger and expected to cut down on breakage costs. One of the great benefits from the low voltage Insulator range is that the budget range is still of a considerable quality and value. The term budget can often lead people to think that the cheaper alternative is going to be of a much poorer quality but that is not always the case. Every year, incandescent bulbs break from ice and snow,Designers suggest that a good cfl bulbs ambient lighting needs to have a variation of fixtures. Do not limit yourself to a single ceiling mounted fixture, which often creates shadows. Ambient lighting can be served well by fluorescent lamps. as well as during installation and removal.

"Some of the larger LEDs we need are $5 apiece," Barker said. "But they are an incredibly durable light bulb, and I have actually seen a demonstration of an LED being run over by a truck, and (it) still worked. Hopefully as they make more LED lights, they will go down in price."

Since 1949, the annual holiday lighting of the courthouse has been the official start of the holiday season in Licking County.

Money raised by the committee pay for the installation, wiring and decorating of the courthouse, gazebo and the surrounding courthouse park.

Community contributions also pay for the replacement of worn equipment and the removal of the decorations in January.

This year marks the 62nd annual holiday lighting of the courthouse and the 40th anniversary of the lighting committee. To begin with, they will make an impact in the decor of the room. Plus, this lighting is fantastic, lending more natural led lights which is always welcomed in any home.

"We feel like the support is there because the courthouse lighting means so much to so many people," Barker said.

Shining a light on energy savings

Shining a light on energy savings

The major obstacle to converting people to LEDs or fluorescents has been price.

Incandescent bulbs are cheap. One of the great benefits from the low voltage Insulator range is that the budget range is still of a considerable quality and value. The term budget can often lead people to think that the cheaper alternative is going to be of a much poorer quality but that is not always the case. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Energy, a 100-watt bulb can cost about 60 cents and last about five months. It will emit heat, increasing electric bills. Compact fluorescents, on the other hand, use about one-quarter of the energy of an incandescent to provide the same level of illumination. So homeowners will need a 25-watt CFL to get the same amount of light as the old 100-watt bulb. The CFL bulb will cost about $3.This also ensures that the product can be used at home or in a retail LED bulb environment and it is fair to say that shops can reap the benefits from using this type of light too.40, but can last a couple of years.

County Electric Supply in Lansdale is selling more and more of those little "squiggly" CFL bulbs. "We sell lots of those,Health issues are one of the main reasons that people led spotlight use saunas. If you have been thinking about purchasing one to improve your health issues, you might have made a good decision. The debate over which type, infrared sauna vs traditional saunas should be used, is dependent on what ailment you are trying to relieve." said Gretchen Smith, showroom designer for the company.

That will undoubtedly grow as costs for CFLs and LEDs continue to drop.

Costs aside, some people say they're turned off by CFLs because they take a few moments to fully brighten a room and most don't work with dimmers. But there are models that correct these issues.

Scott Milne of BerkleyEnergy.com, an energy auditing company in Upper Southampton, says the future of lighting is LED, which will provide the same amount of illumination using only 2 watts - and will last for years.

But they may not be attractive to shoppers until costs drop because some retail for $25 or more.

Meanwhile,Designers suggest that a good cfl bulbs ambient lighting needs to have a variation of fixtures. Do not limit yourself to a single ceiling mounted fixture, which often creates shadows. Ambient lighting can be served well by fluorescent lamps. lighting specialists and electric utilities suggest installing timers on indoor and outdoor lights as well as motion detector lights that only go on when someone passes by them.

Lighting a home in an energy-efficient manner is not just about bulbs and lamps. Using natural light or a process known as daylighting are also options. While not all current LED replacement bulbs live up to their claims, products like the Cree LR6 table lamps Downlight provide you with beautiful warm white light, an 85% energy savings over conventional incandescent bulbs and a 50,000 hour life span.

Solar Reflections in Chalfont installs skylight-type systems. Their Solatube captures sunlight on the roof and redirects it down the tube into an interior room ceiling.

"We do a lot of hallway bathrooms," said company CEO Jacob Vargo. "You turn off the lights and turn on the sun."

The system can also be partnered with a more traditional electric light for nighttime use. A basic installation costs about $650, but qualifies for a federal tax credit that will chop $112 off the price.

Commercial properties are also starting to use daylight harvesting systems, which have sensors to detect how much daylight there is and adjust the lights in response.

Seven Things You Don't Know

Seven Things You Don't Know About Energy-efficient Light Bulbs

We live in a time when there are better ways of making absolutely every consumer choice—from toothpaste and food to sheets and face products—which can make basic buying decisions a little confusing.Designers suggest that a good cfl bulbs ambient lighting needs to have a variation of fixtures. Do not limit yourself to a single ceiling mounted fixture, which often creates shadows. Ambient lighting can be served well by fluorescent lamps. One of the great benefits from the low voltage Insulator range is that the budget range is still of a considerable quality and value. The term budget can often lead people to think that the cheaper alternative is going to be of a much poorer quality but that is not always the case. But it's not so easy for some of us to say "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" and then blindly buy whatever: These decisions matter, even if they take a little extra work, which is why I was excited to see a new piece about ...While not all current LED replacement bulbs live up to their claims, products like the Cree LR6 table lamps Downlight provide you with beautiful warm white light, an 85% energy savings over conventional incandescent bulbs and a 50,000 hour life span. light bulbs. Really!

I currently have three burnt-out incandescents in my studio apartment and I have been putting off buying new ones because I couldn't decide what to get. Brian Howard, an editor at the Daily Green and the co-author of the brand new book Green Lighting, offered some tips in a Q&A, here. Here are the things you need to know:

1. CFLs, the bulbs that look like cork screws, are not the same as LEDs, which have been used in small devices like alarm clocks for some time, and are becoming increasingly common in bulb form for your home (like the one pictured).

2. A good quality LED light bulb should you cost at least $20—anything less and you are probably getting duped. CFLs, meanwhile, go for about $3 or $4 a pop.

3. CFLs aren't as bad and buzzy and unflattering as they used to be.

4. If you rent your place and pay your own utilities, the bulbs pay themselves off in about a year if you use your lights a lot. For homeowners,Multiply that by 6 fixtures and we'll be buying 300 bulbs! If the cost per bulb averages $2 we'll end up paying an led lamp additional $600 for a grand total of $2,550 to run six incandescent lights. this is obviously advisable as well.

5. Look for bulbs with Energy Star labels on them. They will have two-year warranties, run silently (no awful buzzing), work for at last 6,000 hours, be low in mercury, and emit a quality stream of light.

6. CFLs are about 75 percent more efficient than regular, incandescent bulbs, and LEDs are 90 percent more efficient. This also ensures that the product can be used at home or in a retail LED bulb environment and it is fair to say that shops can reap the benefits from using this type of light too.

7. Starting in 2011, the FTC will require new labeling not unlike food labels. These will tell you about brightness, energy efficiency, and how long a bulb will last, making it much easier to compare
