Seminoles find difficulty on offense in road loss to Tigers

A sluggish night offensively led the Florida State University volleyball team to a 3-0 (20-25, 18-25, 19-25) loss at Clemson on Saturday evening at Jervy Gymnasium.

After hitting .290 in a key victory the night before at Georgia Tech, the Seminoles (16-9, 8-7) struggled against a Clemson unit that recorded nine team blocks. FSU was held to a .140 attack percentage, while the Tigers' (15-11, 6-8) Sandra Adeleye recorded 11 kills in 22 attacks to spark her team to a .273 hitting percentage.

FSU got off to a slow start in the first set, although they were sparked by Young's four kills and two blocks. FSU trailed 15-8 before going on a run of eight unanswered points that was capped by a block from Young and Sareea Freeman. Clemson bounced back by winning six of the next seven points, and put FSU away on a set-ending block by Alexa Rand and Moneshia Simmons.

A tough second set was highlighted by a .050 hitting percentage from FSU. Clemson's Serenat Yaz led her team with six kills as the Tigers eventually pulled away late to take a 2-0 advantage.

The Seminoles took an early 6-3 lead in the third set, but Clemson fired back with a 12-6 run to take control of the final frame. Stepanova registered six kills in the set, but Clemson compiled 15 kills in 33 attacks to make things difficult for FSU's defense, and came away with a clean sweep of the match.

"We still have a lot to play for this season," Poole said. "If we can reach 21 wins we still have a chance for the NCAA Tournament with a lot of young players getting critical playing time."
