Official: People lucky to be alive after fire
A man suffered serious burns in a fire that destroyed an older mobile home in the River Bend subdivision Thursday night.
Guadalupe County Fire Marshal Kelly Kistner described a fire that four residents of the 100 block of Lucy Lane were lucky to escape alive.
Kistner said the blaze began in a bedroom of the home after residents retired for the evening.
“A male and a female had gone to bed, and one of them, we’re not sure which, was smoking in bed and fell asleep,” Kistner said.
The bed caught fire.
“They were awakened by the smoke and heat, and the male attempted to put out the fire,” Kistner said. “When he couldn’t, he tried to carry the bedding out the door.”
The man was unable to get all of the burning bedding out of the residence, and the fire consumed the entire home, Kistner said. It also destroyed a vehicle parked outside, damaged two other vehicles and a neighbor’s house and shed.
About a dozen Lake Dunlap Volunteer Fire Department firefighters extinguished the blaze before mutual aid backup arrived.
