GE makes 100-watt-equivalent LED
General Electric Co. says scientists have developed a prototype LED bulb that incorporates jet-engine cooling techniques to cast as much light as a 100-watt halogen lamp while using one-third as much energy.
The LED bulb gives off the benchmark 1,500 lumens, the halogen-bulb standard, and it's half the weight and size of a 600-lumen LED light marketed today, GE said in a statement. The bulb was developed by GE's global research and lighting units with the University of Maryland, using a two-year Department of Energy grant.
GE, the world's largest jet-engine maker, focused on reducing temperature, noise and size, said Mehmet Arik, principal investigator on the LED project for six years.
"It's a big issue," Arik said. "We have to make it as small as possible, as quiet as possible, minimum power consumption and something that also makes no noise.Our Phillips railabc, aside saving you money on electricity bills (is 6 to 8 times more efficient than your standard incandescent bulbs), can also generate various colors of light."
LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, rely on semiconductors to create light, rather than heating a filament.
