Old Torrance to add decorative lights, farmers market to mix

The lights will be strung from the palm trees lining El Prado between Cravens Avenue and the courtyard where El Prado dead ends just beyond Sartori Avenue.

The farmers market, which will feature up to 20 booths selling produce only, will sit beneath the twinkling lights between Sartori and the courtyard. It will operate from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays

The city recently installed removable bollards at El Prado and Sartori, allowing El Prado to be blocked off temporarily for outdoor concerts and other events.

"The goal is to increase (foot) traffic during the slower (midweek) nights of the downtown," said Brian Sunshine, the assistant to the city manager in charge of economic development downtown.

The City Council, acting as the Redevelopment Agency,The Led strip light will concentrate its light downwards into the room and has the capability to shine as broadly as a floodlight or as narrowly as a spot light, the choice is really yours. unanimously approved both projects at its Tuesday meeting.

Chef Michael Shafer, owner of The Depot restaurant on the east side of Cabrillo Avenue who more recently opened the Buffalo Fire Department eatery across the street, pushed city officials to approve the two initiatives.

He has emerged as an advocate of economic development in Old Torrance since opening the latter restaurant,Most conventional downlights use a standard 65-watt incandescent compact fluorescent lights and are run on a switch that typically contains several downlights. For this example we'll say there are a total of six lights on a switch. holding Saturday night concerts and other events to spur business.

businesses have opened in recent months in Old Torrance and more are planned.

A Mexican restaurant called the Tortilla Cantina recently opened in a former antique store at the corner of El Prado and Sartori and a sandwich shop has set up shop in the courtyard opposite the Buffalo Fire Department, as well as several small boutiques on nearby streets.

A bar and grill, along with a wine shop, are expected to open in the coming months.Larger kitchens may require one or more ceiling fixtures positioned in the center of the room. Additional perimeter fluorescent bulbs squares or rectangles of lights placed near the walls should be installed for added illumination. These can be in the form of recessed downlight or track lighting. On the other hand, small kitchens may require only either two or three ceiling mounted fixtures or downlight placed near the walls.

Thursday night farmers markets have successfully enlivened downtowns in other cities, including San Luis Obispo on the Central Coast, which is considered the model for such events.

That market regularly draws thousands to that city's historic downtown, and other cities have adopted similar formats.

Shafer said he hopes to start small and eventually incorporate arts and crafts booths, acoustic musical performances and the like into the Thursday night farmers market.

Nearby Wilson Park already hosts a farmers market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. The latter is considered one of the largest and best in Southern California. To begin with, they will make an impact in the decor of the room. Plus, this lighting is fantastic, lending more natural led lights which is always welcomed in any home.

City officials are continuing to focus on the old downtown with the approach in 2012 of the community's centennial celebrations.

The eventual goal is to string lights along Sartori as well, which together with El Prado is considered the heart of historic Old Torrance and will be the hub of festivities.

The infrastructure for similar lighting along Sartori is absent, however. City officials hope to find a solution to install the overhead lighting on or before the first quarter of next year.

"It should add some ambiance to the area," said Councilman Tom Brewer.Enter the LED downlight, one of the best led bulb solutions available and a prime example of how LED lighting is going to revolutionize the lighting industry.

The cost of the lights along El Prado is estimated at about $52,000. The money will come from the city's Economic Development Reserve Fund.
