A winter wonderland brightens Green Bay

The Green Bay Botanical Garden is bringing Christmas to Green Bay by hosting its 14th annual WPS Garden of Lights.

The WPS Garden of Lights is a way for family and friends to come together and see the beauty of a winter wonderland by viewing over a quarter of a million lights that are designed into different botanical themes.

"The Garden of Lights was established in 1996 by the original director of agriculture, Jerry Landwehr," Dave Barkow, gardening and facility supervisor for the Green Bay Botanical Garden, said.The company unveiled its one millionth bulb today led bulb – an “ultra efficient” omnidirectional LED A19 bulb that offers an 850 lumen output and should last almost 23 years

Landwehr was the leading designer of the lights for the first five years the garden was open.More than 425 million led downlights 60W incandescent bulbs are sold each year in the US, representing about 40% of the market for light bulbs. In 2002, Barkow took over and became head of the design team.

"The Garden of Lights is a great way to get people into the garden in a different season that is normally not meant for gardening," Tonia Derouin, marketing coordinator for the Green Bay Botanical Garden,Utilizing patented design and patent led lights pending Selective Heat Sink Technology for an innovative approach to thermal management, our Array lamps use an array of low power, said.It was the erstwhile Left Front board that first decided to modernize streetlights fluorescent lights on some major thoroughfares. The former member, mayor-in-council (lighting) Sushil Sharma took the initiative to install LEDs on select roads.

This season the Green Bay Botanical Garden introduced new attractions to the winter lineup.

One of the newest items is a 5-foot, 18-point star with over 1,000 LED lights which is placed on top of a 45-foot tall Christmas tree.20 percent of the world's current energy resources are used to power lighting.
